Song of the Day

May 12
Of Monsters and Men "Little Talks"
I find it extremely hard to believe that the last Song of the Day I did was 8 months ago, there is no way time is going that fast. I think it is more likely that all the entries I've done since didn't save properly or something. Anyways, I just heard this song on the Much Music Countdown and I thought it was super cool. I'm not sure how popular it is yet, but if it gets big, I called it. The song is catchy and beautiful and the voices are perfect and the music video is absolutely amazing.

September 16
Gym Class Heroes feat. Adam Levine "Stereo Hearts"
The hook in this song is really catchy, and Adam's voice is perfect for this, but what I like most about this song is how music is used as a metaphor for love/relationships. This metaphor is carried throughout the song and is done well, and is clever. I like the parts about "don't leave me because good music is hard to find" and "make me your radio, turn me up when you are low". It's a great reminder of how both the music and people in our lives can make us happy.

August 22
Three Dog Night "Shambala"
So I was getting my eyebrows waxed last week (in case you and this song was playing on the radio, and the only reason I knew it was because of Lost and it was used during a magical scene. I was (am) a huge Lost fan, the show was smart and mysterious and funny and just amazing. Here is the clip from the show, and here is the video of Three Dog Night preforming it. I dare you to listen without smiling.

July 23
Matt Nathanson "Faster"
If I was a teenager I would think Matt Nathanson was "dreamy" and I don't even know what he looks like. His single before this one was "Come on get Higher" and both songs just make me smile and swoon.

July 22
Paolo Nutini "Candy"
I can't believe it's been almost exactly two months since my last song pick. This one is by a guy my dad told me about, just based on his voice, my dad thought he was some old black guy, but ends up he's some young Irish cutie. You may know his hit "New Shoes" from a couple years ago, but Candy is a little less mainstream and is just a sweet and romantic song. Listen to "High Hopes" to hear his voice sounding really old school (also the song my dad first heard from him).

Foster the People "Pumped Up Kicks"
-This is a song that Sirius Hits 1 has been playing a lot lately. When I first saw the title and band come up I thought it was pretty weird and random, but it's definitely a solid song, the chorus is so catchy and laid back and makes me feel like doing that hand wave move out the window of my car.

-I definitely did a song of the day a week ago and it's not here! It was Summer in the City by Lovin Spoonful. It's a great quirky summer song (especially if you live in the city) here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWXcjYNZais

April 25
David Gray "This Year's Love"
-I love the simple piano and David Gray's voice is amazing. A beautiful song.

Lynyrd Skynyrd "Tuesday's Gone"
-Well, tomorrow is Tuesday, and I will be gone (with the wind) (and I'm leaving my man at home). I am heading out to visit family for two weeks, I will do my best to keep up with the song of the day.  To console yourself, relax to this amazing song, the guitar at the beginning just sings, and there is something so homey about this song, like it feels like it could be part of my childhood. (I suspect it has to do with the movies it is used in: Happy Gilmore and Dazed and Confused.)

Finley Quaye "Dice"
-So this is another song that has a special place in my heart. If you were to ask me what my guy and I's "song" was this one would be about the closest we have to "our song". It's an unconventional love song, but I love the flow and message of the lyrics, and the overall mood and atmosphere. It's elegant but powerful.

Derek and The Dominoes  "Bell Bottom Blues"
-I am making a concerted effort to not repeat artists, but it has tempting to include more Clapton songs - there are just so many good ones. However, I have discovered a loophole, Clapton has played in many bands, so technically Derek and the Dominoes is not another Clapton song... Anyways, this is my favourite track off the Layal and Other Assorted Love Songs album (my second favourite being "Why does love got to be so sad", you should check out that one too). I love Bell Bottom Blues because it's raw and honest and full of emotion. I love the lines: "Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?" Amazing.

Bob Dylan "Hurricane"
-This is the Bob Dylan we know and love, not the wonky one of late. This song is, dare I say, a masterpiece? The story is so well told and the violins and quick pace create the perfect atmosphere. This song tells the true story of Reuben "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer, who was wrongly convicted of murder. Denzel Washington plays the lead in the movie based on the story (a great film to watch if you haven't already). Enjoy the epic story below.

Lighthouse Family "High"
-I heard this song randomly on the radio years ago, but could never figure out who it was by and then kind of forgot about it. About three years ago for some reason I thought about this song, googled the few lyrics I remembered, and was reunited with it. This song just makes me feel good and happy, it's just so darn uplifting and romantic.

Bill Withers "Lovely Day"
-I have Sirius radio in my car, and most of the time I listen to The Coffee House channel which is acoustic singers/songwriters. Some of the stuff they play are from random people I have never heard of, but often they play acoustic versions of songs that are just awesome, and some acoustic covers too. This is what lead me to today's song, except it was Maroon 5's Adam Levine who was singing "Lovely Day" on The Coffee House. His version was more laid back than the original, but he kept in the original chorus, which was nice. As far as the original goes it just makes me happy and want to dance, it's also from the 127 Hours soundtrack. If you read my review on that one, you would know I really enjoyed it, and probably my favourite part of the movie was when this song was playing. It was the perfect fit. Enjoy both versions below (and go watch 127 Hours!)

Collective Soul "The World I Know"
I am a big Collective Soul fan, I like their old stuff, I like their new stuff. I even saw them at the Casino two years ago, they put on a great show. It was hard picking just one by them (though I could do a Collective Soul Song of the Day...) Anyways, I picked this one because not only is the song beautiful (I'm such a sucker for a good violin), but the music video is too. I am not ashamed to admit that I actually shed some tears the first time I saw it (how often does a music video do that?!). So check it out below, while you're on YouTube listen to some more of their stuff of you're into it (I recommend December and Run especially).

Sarah Slean "Sweet Ones"
I am really excited to share this song with you, I first heard it on the radio in Grade 11 or 12 and fell in love with it. I love her voice, the banging on the piano, the attitude, and how it takes its time. Her other single "Lucky Me" was more popular, but I think Sweet Ones is far superior. She is still making music, and even performed at this year's Juno awards (with a bunch of other people) but I really hope she finds a bigger audience, because her music is so unique. Enjoy!

April 9
The Guess Who "Undun"
-I remember being in a car with my dad when I was younger and I asked him who the song was by that was playing on the radio. He said "guess who?", I said "I don't know". This went on for about three more rounds until he finally said "The name of the band is The Guess Who", and we had a little laugh about it. That song was probably "American Woman" or "No Sugar Tonight" both great songs, and probably their most well-known. It wasn't until a couple years ago at a BachmanCummings concert that I discovered Undun. Though I had never heard it before, it was the highlight of the concert for me; the flute, the lyrics, the emotion, Burton Cummings' voice, the groovy feel - it was amazing.

The Trews "Stray"
-So I have decided to do an all-Canadian weekend, and up first is The Trews. I love all their stuff, but their first album  - House of Ill Fame - is especially amazing (though their newer acoustic one is pretty perfect). Anyways, the song of the day is "Stray", I hope it will get you through your Friday a little quicker. It's upbeat and fun, and I love the lyrics, especially the very first line: "love is an awkward rhyme spoken poorly all the time, you need that one perfect line to have it all make sense". I highly suggest you check out more of their stuff if you aren't already a fan; we have a real gem with these Nova Scotia rockers and I hope they are around for a long time. I couldn't find the album version on YouTube, but I did find this pretty cool concert one - though I haven't personally seen them live, everything I have seen of theirs live online is great, it sounds pretty much just like the recording. (If you are looking for more of theirs I suggest "Hopeless", "Every Inambition", "Man of Two Minds", and "Highway of Heroes".

April 7
Eagle-Eye Cherry "Save Tonight"
-This is my all time favourite one-hit wonder. The story is sweet, and I love that guitar and his voice is smooth like buttah! I had actually never seen the music video for this song before now - it's kind of cute, but not what you'd expect considering the lyrics.

Aerosmith "Cryin'"
-In honour of it being American Idol night, today's song is my favourite one by Aerosmith. I love the lyrics, I love the emotion, I love the music video. But what really cemented this song as my fav by Aerosmith was when I saw it done in the movie "Be Cool" starring John Travolta. It's better if you watch the whole movie rather than just the clip because the build up to the girl's success makes the performace more impactful, but a good version nonetheless and a cool movie. Below are links to the original music video, and the one from Be Cool.

The Beatles "I've Just Seen a Face"
-This song, along with Eleanor Rigby are my two favourite Beatles songs, and both are right up there on my all-time favourites list. I've Just Seen a Face isn't the most well-known Beatles song, I first heard it while watching Across the Universe, which is an amazing movie, and I highly recommend it even if musicals aren't your thing. This song is so fun and beautiful. Below is the original version, as well as the one from the movie. Movie version possibly better? Blasphemy, I know, but it may be true (or maybe I am just swayed by Jim Strugess and his cuteness).

Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina "Stereo Love"
-I know, I know, this song borders on techno at times, which isn't really my wheelhouse, but I just can't get enough of the accordion in this song. I love the European feel of it (and even the video, although those red boots and panties are kind of random)

Eric Clapton "Running on Faith"
-For those of you who don't know, Clapton is just about as good as it gets for me. I think I discovered his music around grade 11 and have been in love ever since. There's just something about his voice and the soul he puts into his music; and his discography has something for everyone: pop, rock, blues. This particular song is especially close to my heart, and may possibly be the song I answer with if you ever asked me what my favourite is. I usually listen to this song when I am upset, because not only is it simply an amazing song, but, for me at least, it also reminds me to just have faith that things will get better (and not necessarily just in matters of the heart). I am not particularly sad today, but I wanted to share this one early on so that maybe it will find a place in your heart too.

Elvis Presley "Yesterday/Hey Jude" (live)
-There are some Elvis songs that I really love, and some that are not so great. So I was pleasantly surprised when I switched over to the Elvis radio station and heard the King's cover/mash-up of the Beatles' hits "Yesterday" and "Hey Jude". I wonder what the Beatles thought about this cover - I liked it.

Adele: "Rolling in the Deep"
-I was aware of Adele for months now, but had never heard anything of hers on the radio and never bothered to look her up. But this song is getting some major airplay these days (at least on Sirius Hits 1) and I LOVE this song. It's haunting and beautiful.

  1. I'm really enjoying your songs of the day.

Knew you'd soon include an Eric song. It was kind of him to play it in the key of G, I was strumming along on my mandolin.

I've Just Seen a Face is a Beatles' gem.

Classic Aerosmith. When I grow up I want to dress like Steven, love him on AI.

    Thanks for the great tunes.
