I watched a lot of movies prior to writing this blog (one reason why I decided to write a blog) that I will probably not review because I watched it long enough ago that I won't remember enough specifics to do a review justice. So this page will be a place for me to recommend movies that I have not reviewed but think you should watch anyway.
You are also welcome, nay encouraged! to recommend movies to me here, I am certainly open to requests.
A movie that will make you want to hold the one you love extra tight is "Love and Other Drugs"
ReplyDeleteI was first put off by this movie because of the drugs (my mom admitted she was too), ends up they are pharmaceuticals and not illegal ones, so go watch it! Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal are great together, but watch out for some boobies and for the lighthearted first half to morph into a pretty serious second half.
A movie that will make you think about the way you think is "Temple Grandin"
ReplyDeleteClaire Danes won a Golden Globe for her role as Temple - it's the real life story of a young women with high-functioning autism that changes the way we think about disabilities. After watching this movie you can look up Temple Grandin on YouTube and watch the real Temple giving speeches about autism and how people and animals think.
A movie that will be make you proud of Canada's "wild" West is "Gunless"
ReplyDeleteAs a history major and buff, I love me some Paul Gross and what he is doing for Canadian film and history. He was the man behind Passchendaele, and history teachers all across the country should be thankful. Gunless is probably (definitely) less historically accurate than Passchendaele, but nevertheless, I enjoyed this rare look at Canada's wild West (not just for Americans!). The jokes were cute, and Paul's dirty Montana Kid was pretty formulaic, but this movie filled a Canadian Western void in me.
A movie that will make you dig out your old NES and comics is "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
ReplyDeleteSo I haven't been a fan of Michael Cera since Superbad (his awkward wooing is a little overdone), but the visuals in this movie almost made me forgive how much I dislike Michael. I love how the villians turn to coins when they are defeated and the 'pow's and 'smack's that come up on the screen like a comic. This is a very clever movie and I enjoyed it thoroughly even though the two main characters (Scott and Ramona) are annoying.
A movie that will make you laugh uncomfortably is "The World According to Garp"
ReplyDeleteA few months ago I read The Cider House Rules by John Irving (a great book and film). Because I enjoyed the book so much I went searching for his other books. I have been unable to find a used copy of Garp, but did watch the movie. Starring Glenn Close and Robin Williams, this movie is just the right amount of strange. Williams is at the top of his game and you can't help but love a transsexual John Lithgow. Released in 1982, it's an oldie but a goodie.
A movie that will make you stand up and cheer is "The King's Speech"
ReplyDeleteI think the Oscar success for this movie was warranted. The three main characters were just perfect. I can't really pinpoint why I like Helena Bonham Carter (I suspect it comes from Fight Club), but I do, and after playing crazies in Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland (and in real life)I loved her as the stoic Queen Mum. Colin Firth and Geoffery Rush were great together and created an interesting and dynamic relationship. This is a great story, and also shines some light on our own Queen's childhood.
